Eckhard Jaschinski

Misereor Sunday 2001
From Sankt Augustin to the World
Alabare from Peru. Santo from the Philippines. Lamb of God from the United States. Abba
Jeya Jeya from India.
These and other songs from around the world provided an international character to the
celebration of the Miseroer Sunday in the chapel of St. Augustin Mission Seminary, April 1,
2001.
The Fratres through the leadership of Pertus Kelyombar sang various songs in seven
different languages, namely: Spanish, Filipino, English, Hindi, Bahasa Indonesia, Chinese
and German. Priests from five different countries (Germany, Slovakia, Japan, China and
Indonesia) also re-enforced the internalionality in the said annual commemoration.
Fr. Helmut Thometzki, who was a missionary in Indonesia stressed in his Homily the
importance of the Misereor Sunday and the acts of mercy and compassion extended to the
underprivileged in the developing countries. "The poor countries need not only our mercy
and support for many worthwhile projects but also to empower them help themselves." He
also explained the context of mercy in the theme of this years Lenten Action: Teilen mit
Gewinn (Sharing with Profit) through opening one's eyes and heart for the cause of the
oppressed and the marginalized for in sharing, one is enriched and a just society for all is
attained in the process.
"The poor countries have also their richness," he said as he mentioned the spirit of
community, hospitality and the close family ties as few examples, values whose meaning is
slowly deteriorating in many developed countries like Germany.
Misereor is a German funding-agency founded by Cardinal Josef Frings with the
noble aim of helping many developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Every
Fifth Lenten Sunday in Germany is dedicated to this cause, celebrated through various programs/events.
International Bible Exhibit
exhorts SVD Bible Apostolate
More than 300 Bibles from over 40 countries in 70 languages and 25 different ways of writing
were presented in the International Bibel Exhibit in St. Augustine and Steyl.
Originally build for the Open House in St. Augustin on Oct. 1, 2000, the Exhibit fascinated
both guests and confreres that it was also brought to the SVD Motherhouse in Steyl,
Netherland on the occasion of their Open House on October 15, 2000 to commemorate the
125th founding anniversary of the SVD.
From December 3, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, the Patron of Mission until January 29,
the Feast of Bl. Josef Freinademetz, the International Bible Exhibit was again opened in the
Auditorium Maximum of the Faculty of Theology. On January 28, the community celebrated
Bible Sunday with a Liturgy which focused on the importance of the Bible in the Spirituality
and Apostolate of the SVD worldwide.
What gave color and meaning to the Exhibit were the pictures and quotations from various
confreres on their biblical apostolate in an effort to introduce the Internationality of the SVD
and to stress its name and essence: Divine Word.
(The Bible Exhibit will be featured in the SVD Museum in St. Wendel on May 20, the
International Museums Day).
